Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

cherry heirloom tomatoes
Aren't these cute?  We bought these heirloom cherry tomatoes at a local grocery store simply because we've never had them before.  Growing up, red tomatoes were the norm, so getting to enjoy these flavorful yellow, green, orange, and purple tomatoes was a nice treat.

Unlike "regular" cherry tomatoes, heirloom cherry tomatoes are non-hybrid or open pollinated.  You can plant their seeds to get more heirloom tomatoes, whereas hybrid/"regular" tomatoes require cross-pollination and their seeds are often sterile.  Heirloom tomatoes vary in taste as they do in color.  They are rich in antioxidants and vitamins - and make for a pretty addition to salads.

We paired the heirloom cherry tomatoes with fresh mozzarella cheese from the Greenmarket.  With a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper, it was a quick appetizer.  We loved the mix of the heirloom cherry tomatoes' sweet and tangy flavor with the creamy and fresh cheese.  We cannot wait to buy these little colorful tomatoes at the Greenmarket this summer.

  5. OMG! I would love to have access to such gorgeous produce. That is so maddening... that is this progressive, highly technical world we have let the most beautiful and basic flavours and foods disappear, or be changed or altered. I can wait until summer. I can, and must, as where I live - that is when they grow... but even then, such quality will be difficult to find. I DO grow my own... and they are wonderful. Just not enough on a city lot.
Thank you for sharing your bounty.
    Gorgeous. Nothing is more gorgeous.
